Relatively few M&A transactions achieve their stated objectives in terms of synergies achieved, cost reduction in a given timescale, market positioning or even shareholder value in the short/medium term. The difficulties of taking two different corporate cultures with distinct management styles and blending them into a successful new entity are often seriously underestimated. Regrettably, the sum of the parts is often a lot less than the whole.
